Boat Tragedies: Now A Stiff
Warning From Marine
Bandar Seri
Begawan - In the wake of two recent incidents of boats
capsizing in the open seas, resulting in several people still missing,
the Marine Department, in a media release, has given several
guidelines to the public, especially those intending to go out into
the open sea.
|
The exceptionally rough condition of
the sea at present due to rain, strong winds and waves reaching
between three and four metres high is very dangerous to boats and
small vessels, more so with boats or small vessels made of wood.
The hull, the propelling power
and the stablity of these wooden vessels cannot withstand to the
impact of the strong waves.
This may cause the boats or
vessels to be unstable rendering them to easily overturn and even
break-up by the impact.
According to the Marine
Department, the-sea swells may impact boats or small vessels to be
flung above the waves and be slammed down repeatedly.
This repeated tossing of the
boats or vessels will inevitably cause those within the vessels to
be thrown overboard into the waters. |

Hence, the Marine Department has
urged boats and small vessels operators not to venture into the
open sea until the condition returns to calm.
However, those who do have to go
out to sea, are strongly advised to take extra precautionary
measures.
These include:
- - Wearing life jackets at all
times while out at sea. This is to enable any search and rescue
operation to easily spot anyone in the water as the jackets will
help one to remain afloat eventhough one may be unconscious.
- - Obtaining weather reports
and weather forecast. Should the forecast be unfavourable, then
cancel the outing.
- - While out at sea, boaters
should be sensitive to weather changes including the sea
condition. Should the weather and the sea condition deteriorate,
boaters should return to land immediately.
- - And finally, while out at
sea, boaters should communicate with relatives through, for
example mobile phones, informing the relatives of their location
frequently.
