By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan – The Royal Brunei Police Force stressed on road safety especially during the current festive mood. All these should not only be practised during a festive period but at all times to curb road accidents, Police said.

This was highlighted by Snr Supt. Abd Rahim Hj Mohd Noor, Acting Director of Road Traffic and Investigation Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force in a recent press conference.

Road users should nurture an understanding that road safety is a joint responsibility, between all road users drivers and pedestrians. In this context, respect among those on the road is paramount, he said.

The police also advised road users to know drivers' rights on the road such as stopping at traffic lights, giving way, being cooperative and patient.

They must also be cautious when overtaking especially at highways, school, bends and the long white line. Motorists are also advised not to overtake at prohibited areas such as bends and to slow-down when entering villages.

They reminded on getting ready to stop when yellow lights glow, not to rush, to abide by the speed limit, to be cautious during heavy downpour when the road is slippery and to ensure the wiper is functioning well.

The car must also be in good condition before use by inspecting tyres, wipers and lights. They are also urged to fasten seat belts, avoid using mobile phones while on the road and to pull over when answering the phone.

Parents were also advised not to let non-licensed offsprings drive. Drivers must also be able to control their vehicles which means that they should not drive when sleepy.

Drivers must not tail too closely, but give a reasonable distance in the event the driver makes a sudden stop. Pedestrians are also advised to be cautious when crossing the road and to use crossing zones or flyovers.

Meanwhile DSP Pg. Mohd Roslin B. Pg. Hj Bakar, Acting Head of the Public Relations Office of the police force advised employers to furnish their foreign workers with copies of documents and passports.

This helps to facilitate the enforcement officers when conducting spot check and raid at the quarters or job sites. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
