Athletes
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan – The Brunei Darussalam contingent to the Pt Borneo
Games yesterday evening came home to a hero's welcome after an
impressive performance of bagging eight gold, 13 silver and 18 bronze
medals in the tournament against the best athletes from Sarawak,
Labuan and Sabah (host), Malaysia from 18th to 22nd December 2005.
Brunei Darussalam's gold medals came
from ten-pin bowling, gasing, sepak takraw and athletics. On hand to
welcome the national contingent at the Brunei International Airport
was Haji Sumadi Bin Sukaimi, Acting Permanent Secretary at the
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
According to Awang Haji Haris Bin
Othman, Chef De Mission of the contingent, overall Brunei Darussalam
have improved in certain events especially football, sepak takraw and
men's hockey but there is still room for further development in sports
like women's hockey, athletics and the gasing team event.
He also revealed his disappointment
with the organiser of the l" Borneo Games, saying that there was still
a lot of room for improvement for the organiser. Awang Haji Haris
explained that the Brunei contingent had encountered a number of
`hiccups' during the competition, namely, technical problems,
refereeing as well as logistics in terms of transport which did not
meet their expectations.
In the year 2009, Brunei Darussalarn
will host the Borneo Games which is aimed at strengthening goodwill
between participating countries in Borneo Island. --
