Nurses Briefed On Anti-Corruption
Campaign
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - To Raise awareness, a briefing on the Anti-Corruption
Campaign was held at the Ministry of Health's building yesterday
morning for a batch of 61 nurses who are currently on their
orientation course. On hand to deliver the talk was the bureau's
Senior Special Investigator, Salamat Liman.
During his presentation, Salamat
explained that corruption is the misuse of power for personal gains,
such as when an agent or officer makes demands from suppliers to help
speed up the process of payment.
The Senior Special Investigator also
highlighted the "Gift and Corruption" issue. According to him, an
insufficient income to support the family is given most of the time as
an excuse for corruption. However, the real reason for its occurrence
is greed.
He disclosed that offenders
prosecuted for corruption could face a fine of up to B$30,000 and
seven-year imprisonment or equivalent of the bribes received.
Salamat
added that to prevent corruption, every public and private sector
officer should be inculcated with INTEGRITY (I Never Take Extra Gifts
or Rewards In Order to Please You), which comprises three main
characteristics.
They are honesty (completing a task
with excellence), sincerity (not expecting any reward) and firmness
(avoid damaging the name or image of the employer or country).
The Senior, Special Investigator also
advised participants to report any corruption that might be taking
place to the bureau and told them that the identity of informers or
the people being investigated would be classified as confidential.
