Seminar Promotes Energy Efficiency
By Avoiding Waste
By Grace Jlu
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Energy efficiency is essentially about achieving
`more with less' by using energy wisely and avoiding waste to achieve
the same or greater results for consumers. Saving energy means saving
money.
This was stated by the Head of Energy
Matters, Department of Electrical Services (DES), Hj Umar bin Hj Mohd
Tahir speaking on behalf of the Director of DES, Prime Minister's
Office, Hj Aziz bin Abd Hamid, who was unable to attend the function,
during the seminar on the `Promotion On Energy Efficiency And
Conservation (PROMEEC) For Major Industries' at the Centrepoint Hotel
in Gadong yesterday morning.
The objectives of the seminar was to
promote energy efficiency' particularly in industry and to educate and
train relevant staff members from various organisations to use energy
efficiently.
Prior to the seminar, energy audits-cumtechnical
visits were conducted at Butra Heidelberg Cement Sdn Bhd and Kingston
Beverage & Creamery Sdn Bhd in Brunei by three technical experts from
the Energy Conservation Centre, Japan (ECCJ), in cooperation with DES
and Asean Centre for Energy (ACE). The audits were an avenue of
transfer of technology and experience on energy efficiency and
conservation from Japan to Asean member nations.
During the seminar, Hj Umar added
that the objectives of energy audits were to study the present pattern
of energy consumption and identifying the possibilities and
opportunities of saving energy in factories.
He remarked that energy prices have
increased dramatically over the years due to the huge demand of oil
and climatic atmospheric temperatures which are also onthe rise.
The potential benefit of the energy
audit is substantial which can result in cost savings that in turn
help improve the business' competitiveness. He emphasised to
participants of the seminar to be energy-wise and only use what is
needed through the tool of _energy audits.
About 70 participants from the public
and private sectors took partin the seminar, which comprised three
sessions carrying the themes `Policy and Initiatives On Energy
Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C)', 'EE&C Best Practice in
Industries' and `The Way Forward'. Speakers from Asean nations and
Japan include Hisashi Amano, Hideyuki Tanaka acid Fumio Ogawa,
Japanese Technical Experts from ECCJ, Dr Weerawat Chantanakome
Executive Director of ACE, Hj Abd Shawal Yaman from DES, among others.

`Energy Overview-in Brunei Darussalam'',.and `Initiatives and
Programmes of ECCJ on EE&C in Industry in Japan'. Presentations of
case studies of various genres included the cement industry in Brunei
and `What are the Barriers and Measures on the Implementation in
Industry?' The seminar included discussions on `The Development of
Technical Directory' and `The Development of Database/Benchmark/
