Cut The Graft And Give
Transparency A Chance
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Cumbersome procedures that delay and obstruct
business opportunities and put valuable investors who wish to invest
in Brunei off course, must be nipped in the bud and transparency in
public sectors promoted, were among key suggestions made during a
recent dialogue session between representatives of all Chambers of
Commerce and the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB).
|
As a follow up of to the dialogue,
round table talks were held yesterday between the Brunei/Muara
District Office, Municipal Board, Land Department, Immigration
Department, Brunei Industrial Development Authority (BINA), Town
and Country Planning and Department of Multi-Lateral Economy of
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
One key objective expressed by
the ACB was to work hand in hand with other relevant departments
to promote a conducive and ethical business environment in Brunei.
The objective was in line with
the Apec initiative and also the United Nations Convention Against
Corruption to which Brunei is a signatory.
The Bureau claims to have its
objective in place through its Corruption Prevention Section to
oversee development and improvement in the working procedures of
relevant government departments in providing services to the
public. |

Yesterday's talks were chaired by
Datin Paduka Hjh Intan, Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau who
said that it was an obligation to the Apec initiative to promote
Brunei as a conducive investment destination in line with His
Majesty's titah to diversify the country's economy.
His Majesty signed the Apec
initiative to promote investment. The Bureau agreed corruption was
a serious threat to good governance and the proper development of
economic system, consequently deterring investment.
Fighting graft and ensuring
transparency was thus essential to the development of economies
for the benefit of the people. |
Discussions also reminded that these
responsibilities were shared by all government departments at all
levels, with steadfast commitment, equal responsibility and guiding
leadership of the heads of departments.
These are also shouldered by the
relevant authorities in the issuance of licences for, and matters in
connection with the establishment of a business, with the view in
creating a conducive business environment of level playing field where
everyone has equal opportunities.
This is of paramount importance to
generate more economic activity in the private sector and enhance
public-private sector partnership in combating corruption and also
attract investments into the country, the talks noted. --
