Japanese PM turns up at work on two wheels

Tokyo - Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi startled his environment minister and reporters on Friday by appearing in the lobby of his office on a Segway electric scooter.

The sight of the grey-haired premier gingerly steering the two-wheeler around the building had Environment Minister Yuriko Koike in fits of giggles as she arrived for a cabinet meeting.

Koizumi received the Segway from U.S. President George W. Bush as a surprise gift at their meeting in Kyoto last month, but had never before been seen riding it in public.

Bush fell off one two years ago, but Koizumi managed to steer his around the courtyard of his office and practised reversing without mishap.

"It's quite easy," Koizumi told reporters. -- Reuters
