Four Years Jail For Using Fake $500

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 24-year-old Bruneian was sentenced to four years' imprisonment yesterday after he pleaded guilty to using a counterfeit bank note as genuine last month.

The Intermediate Court Judge heard from DPP Pg Jasmine Pg Hj Bahrin that the defendant, Hj Maswadi bin Pungut, knowingly used a fake Brunei $500 currency note as genuine when he purchased some items at a shop in Jalan Rimba on November 18, this year.

The note, bearing the serial number B/1 1001062, was at the time accepted by the cashier at the shop and the defendant got back his change.

On November 22, the shop manager went to a bank to deposit money into the shop's account and a bank staff came across the counterfeit currency and grew suspicious.

The bank made a police report on November 23, which led to the defendant's arrest on November 29.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
