Brunei Beat Pakistan In Rugby
By Alex How

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei's U-19 rugby team beat host Pakistan 14-5 in a tight and close match at the ongoing Asian Rugby Union U-19 Championships in Lahore,-Pakistan- on Tuesday, Dec 13.

Brunei had the advantage of a stiff breeze in the first half and quickly took the initiative. They forced Pakistan into errors and were given penalties close to the line but instead of kicking for goal they tried to score tries but were repelled.

After about 15 minutes a loose kick from Pakistan fell into Daud's hands and he ran fast and stepped past several defenders to score under the posts.

Ak Muiz kicked the conversion. Brunei took the ball in from the kickoff and attacked again through Abd Muiz at halfback, Raushan, Isa and Dinlee.

From a maul close to the line the ball was passed to Dinlee who forced his way across the line. Muiz kicked another conversion.

Pakistan were stung into action and their forwards drove- towards our line. Brunei players defended grimly and after a time were able to clear their line.

Pakistan continued to keep possession up-field but they did not count on the catching and running skills of Rangga who repeatedly broke the line of advancing Pakistani players.

Just before halftime Brunei had another opportunity to score but the final pass went to ground.

In the second half the Pakistani forwards had the advantage of the breeze and they attacked repeatedly. Stout defending from the backline, especially halfback Muiz, Dinlee and Md Isa and forwards Hock Wee, Amir, Zulfadhli and Khairuddeen kept the Pakistani team out until only a few minutes remained.

Their try was not converted. Brunei players of the_ day were Yeo Hock Wee in the forwards and Ak Abd Muiz Pg Hj Rahman in the backline but to be fair all players put their heart and soul into the match.

The Pakistan team were bigger, especially their forwards. Our forwards held their own; they competed for the ball in the loose and were not intimidated by the bigger opposition.

Brunei backs repeatedly broke the advantage line and but for better handling we would have scored two or three more tries. Our players showed great commitment and they used basic skills effectively. .

Brunei will play their next Division Two match today against India who had beaten Pakistan 31-0 earlier in the tournament.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
