Sorry State Of Jerudong Boat Ramp
By Lutjanid

Bandar Seri Begawan - Over the years, waves have piled up more and more sand in the Jerudong Public Boat Ramp, to the point that anyone attempting to launch a boat will encounter difficulties.

This situation, if left to worsen, may well threaten the livelihoods of a number of commercial fishermen who rely on the ramp to launch their trailer boats.

Given the rise in recreational boaters and fishermen in recent years, the ramp in Jerudong is an important piece of infrastructure.

However, there are several potholes surrounding the ramp area, showing negligence on the part of the authorities.

While the move to install two street lamps to light up the launch areas has been applauded, government agencies cannot plead ignorance to the plight of the ramp, since enforcement officers regularly visit the area to check returning fishermen for valid fishing Licenses and work permits.

"Can government agencies try and do something about it?" questioned an observer.

He added, "I'm sure that if local contractors were approached, they would be willing to dredge and deepen the area for free or at a minimal cost, in exchange for proceeds of sale from the sand they dredge up."  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
