Brunei Joins Asean Civil Society Conference

Bandar Seri Begawan - Four participants from different NGOs attended the Asean Civil Society Conference held at the Centre for Asean Studies, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysia from December 7 till 9.

They were Pengiran Datin Paduka Hajah Mariam binti Pengiran Hj Matarsat, Vice President II of Women Council; Dayang Mariya @ Maria binti Eya from BASMIDA; Dr Haji Azasahibul bin Hj Zainal Abidin from Brunei Youth Council; and Awg Damit bin Hj Awang Chuchu from Pambela.

Organisers were hopeful that the theme of the conference, `Building a Common Future Together', would provide the framework from where stakeholders could move forward to concretise ideas and concepts into workable solutions for the betterment of Asean people.

Addressing the opening ceremony was Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia, Dato Seri Syed Hamid Albar.

Among the objectives of the conference were to identify the role that civil society can play in achieving an Asean community, to provide a platform for Asean Civil Society to discuss matters of common interest and to enhance rapport between the respective governments and civil society for the betterment of the Asean community.

Sub-themes for the conference were Asean Identify & Media; Economy & Trade: Human Dignity; Natural Resources & Environment; and Women, Youth and Indigenous Groups. The outcome of the conference has been submitted for the Asean Summit.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
