Brunei Begins To Audit Usage Of
Energy
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei's Electrical Services Department (DES)
officers together with their Asean counterparts and help from the
Japanese government has begun to visit private factories in the
Sultanate to check the usage of electricity and promote energy
conservation and efficiency.
The "energy auditing" is part of the
drive undertaken by the authority to cut down on electricity usage in
the country as the consumption is said to be among the highest in the
region.
The electrical department also
recently revealed electricity dues owed to them amounted to a whopping
$250 million, of which $100 million are owed by the public and $150
million by the government and private sector.
Hj
Shawal B. Yaman, the Head of Energy Division of the Department of
Electrical Services, said yesterday that to mark the transfer of the
Electrical Services Department to the administration of the Minister
of Energy, the first effort of this office is to choose this month to
promote energy conservation and efficiency.
"With the cooperation of the Japanese
Ministry of Economic, Trade and Industry (METI) through Conservation
Japan and Centre for Energy based in Jakarta, the Department of
Electrical Services is hosting a group from Asean to visit two
industries or factories in Brunei for energy auditing.
"During the visit, they will
interview, promote and train these industries to conserve electricity.
It is time for us to teach people and promote energy efficiency and
conservation. The first target is the cement industry followed by a
creamery & beverage company due to their electricity consumption. This
is to teach them how to use energy wisely.
"These are some of the places where
we could conserve electricity. It will later be followed by
discussions and recommendations to the factories," said Hj Shawal.
Hj
Shawal also said the department will also hold a seminar on promoting
energy efficiency at the 6th floor of Centrepoint Hotel on Dec 17
starting at 9am.
It is open to the public and experts
from Asean member countries will present their case studies on
promoting energy efficiency. --
