Faces Extortion Charge
By Malai FadleyRizal
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A 26-year-old local was fined $800 or a month in jail
in default after pleading guilty to stealing a mobile phone.
The Bandar Magistrate's Court
yesterday heard from Prosecuting Officer (PO) Christopher Ng that the
defendant, Noorazmi bin Sariang @ Lampoh, drove around a retail shop
in Kg Salambigar on December 3 when he spotted a teenager together
with his friends hanging out by a phone booth near the shop.
The defendant approached the
17-year-old boy and asked to borrow his (boy's) Nokia 6600 mobile
phone. The victim said he had no credit left and the defendant offered
to recharge the phone using his own credit.
The victim recharged the phone and
gave it to the defendant who then used the phone and walked towards
his car and drove off. The defendant sold the phone for $250 the next
day to - an Indonesian man working at a car wash.
The police managed to retrieve the
phone. Meanwhile, Noorazmi also faced a charge in the High Court
yesterday. According to the charge, the defendant allegedly committed
extortion on a 25-year-old Indonesian man and induced him to give up
BND$700, a Nokia 6600 mobile phone and one Easi recharge card.
The charge stated that the defendant
"voluntarily caused fear of instant hurt" by pressing a stainless
steel flick knife on the victim and had committed robbery. The case
will be mentioned again before the High Court on January 11, 2006.
