Agreement To Boost Seafood Sector

Begawan - The seafood processing sector received a major boost
yesterday with the signing of an agreement between the Department of
Fisheries, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources and four local
companies.
The signing ceremony for the
agreement on the rental of site and building between the His Majesty's
Government and the four local companies was held at the department's
headquarters at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources
building yesterday.
With the signing of the agreement,
the department hopes that these companies will be more committed in
increasing and upgrading their production.
The four local companies are Semaun
Seafood Sdn Bhd, DB Bumiku Sdn Bhd, TMM Processing Sdn Bhd and Hasmit
Icemaker. Representing the government at the signing ceremony was the
Fisheries Department's Acting Director Dyg Hjh Hasnah Ibrahim.
Representing Semaun Seafood Sdn Bhd
was Awg Haniff Madakia, while DBBumiku Sdn Bhd, TMM Processing Sdn Bhd
and Hasmit Icemaker were represented by Awg Hj Bakri HJ Momin, Awg Hj
Haripan Hj Aji and Awg Hj Hasbi Pehin Khatib Hj Abdullah respectively.
To date, two companies have
successfully ventured into the export market, namely, Semaun Seafood
Sdn Bhd and TMM Processing Sdn Bhd, who respectively export Rostrich
and Tiger Prawns to United States and Japan and United States, Taiwan
and Singapore.
Other companies, meanwhile, target
the local market, while firms such as Ice Making Factory support this
industry as well as the aquaculture industry.
In an effort to develop the fisheries
industry through the processing sector, the government through the
Department of Fisheries has provided
industrial sites for the construction of processing factories as well
as factory buildings for seafood activities.
The department has implemented
several programmes to increase the production of seafood by building
the Muara Phase 2 Fish Storage and Distribution Centre.
The department also provided a Fish
Production Handling Centre in its efforts to achieve the targets of
the processing industry. --
