Immigration Raid
By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Thirteen suspected immigration offenders were
apprehended yesterday in what was one of the biggest Immigration raids
so far conducted by the Immigration Enforcement Division.
Two Immigration enforcement teams
targeted 11 restaurants and eateries during a raid in Mukim Pengkalan
Batu, Mukim Sengkurong, Mukim Gadong and Mukim Berakas.
The operation codenamed 'Ops Basmi 97
/ 2005' was led by Senior Immigration Officer Sabtu bin Hj Alim.
From the raid 17 foreign workers were
issued special passes, four were each given a summons letter, while 13
were apprehended for failing to show valid personal identification and
passport.
Six of the offenders were believed to
have been working with a Visitor's Pass, which is against the law and
punishable with a compound fine of up to B$600 if found guilty.
Another five offenders were
registered as maids but found to be working at restaurant premises, an
offence which can be charged under the regulation 15(2).
The rest of the suspected Immigration
offenders were found in various violations of Immigration Act
including living and working in the country after their passes had
expired.
In a statement from the Immigration
Enforcement Division, employers and owners of restaurants or eateries
could face interrogation in light of Immigration offences. If found
guilty, they could be charged under Chapter 55 (e) of the Immigration
Act Section 17 for "providing work to immigration violators". --
