Flood Problem Drowns Hopes Of
Progress
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - After moving to the site over two years ago, SKF
Florists Recreational Garden owner Hjh Siti Khadijah Hj Ibrahim found
herself stuck in a dilemma and unable to progress her business further
as the area is constantly inundated by flood waters.
Three areas of the site have been
converted for various business activities such as plants rentals,
wedding packages, fishing pond, an office and recreational gardens.
However, because the place - the
first privately-run recreational park - is flood-prone, she is unable
to construct jogging tracks and a canteen in the additional two acres
of the recreational area allocated to her for the business.
"During rainy periods such as now,
the area can truly be inundated in water, causing damages to the
exterior.
"At worst, the water would pour into
the office. Such incidents has happened four times in the past,
causing extensive damages.
"I must thank the Ministry of
Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) and its Agriculture Department
for working hard to help me alleviate the flooding problem, but
unfortunately until now the works done are not that effective. Proper
studies need to be made to stop the flood waters from coming to my
area," she said.
However, the government has allocated
a budget - for next year - towards the construction of proper drains
and channels, she added.
She expressed hopes that works could
be carried out early next year thus elevating her from her suffering.
"I must say I have done well to keep
up a good business in this place, but I need help so I can progress
into offering more recreational activities to the public," she said.
After the November 23 flooding, she
called the MIPR for help and the ministry immediately instructed a
contractor to dig up drains at various places.
"Unfortunately, the excavator broke
down more than five days ago."
After every flood, Hjh Siti has to
top up the" gravel at the entrance, which costs her $200 per truck for
each trip.
"If the floods continue, I would not
be able to pay to top up stones and gravels at the public car-park
area," she lamented. Industry observer who visited the recreational
area said the place needs a proper concrete drain outside the site.
