Seeing Henry Is Believing
By Izam S. Ya'akub & Grace Jiu

Bandar Seri Begawan - Henry Wanyoike, the Global Ambassador for Standard Chartered Bank's `Seeing is Believing' campaign, will take part in the First Brunei Marathon, giving hope to those with disabilities in the country.

Wanyoike from Kenya recounted to the press that after losing sight during his prime, he came across a double amputee during his rehabilitation who had lost both his arms, but went on to do everyday things like washing, typing and eating with his feet.

"I came across some brave people who were able to overcome their disadvantages and it gave me more courage," he said.

From there on, he went to face challenges with a distinct determination to succeed.

He is also grateful for the loving support that came from his mother.

"Those with disabilities do not want sympathy, but opportunity," remarked Wanyoike.

"The government should be available for, support and encourage corporate help, so that those who are impaired and disabled could still contribute positively to the country.

"All members of society have an important role to play in the building of a strong and happy nation," he added.

Already an inspiration to many around the world, including the Sultanate's very own visually impaired runner Noralizulrainee Ali Yussop, Wanyoike preaches the mantra of `Disability is Not Inability', strongly believing that a country like Brunei could assist its disabled people to be wonders of the future.

Meanwhile, Standard Chartered Bank also organised a motivational workshop yesterday morning at the ICC in Berakas.

Its purpose was to help participants live their dreams, support and reach out to each other, as well as be role models.

Wanyoike was the empowering example used during the workshop, which was facilitated by CfBT Education Services (B) Sdn Bhd and attended by about 80 youth participants, comprising members of the Red Crescent, scouts, girl guides and UBD's undergraduates.

The event also created awareness on the tens of millions of visually impaired people worldwide and how most of them could be cured with minor operations, or prevented in the first place with enough funds.

An inspiring and heart-warming video of Wanyoike's life was also played. "Don't give up. Give yourself strength. Life is a marathon, never smooth, with its ups and downs," he said during his motivational speech prior to the presentation.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
