UBD To Host Conference On English
In Southeast Asia

Linguistics of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at Universiti
Brunei Darussalam (UBD) will be organising the 10'h Conference on
`English in Southeast Asia: A Decade of Growth' from Dec 12 to 14 at
the UBD Chancellor Hall.
The conference is supported by the
British Council and Royal Brunei Airlines.
This is the latest in a series of annual conferences held among the
countries of the region. Previous English conferences in Southeast
Asia (ESEA) have been held in Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia,
Australia, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Indonesia.
Themes that will be focused include
`Literature in English in Southeast Asia', `Southeast Asian Varieties
of English', 'Multilingualism', `Roles and Contexts of English in
Southeast Asian Societies', `Using Language in New Technologies and
English in the Media in Southeast Asia'.
Plenary speakers include Dr David C.S.
Li, Associate Professor at the Department of English and
Communications, City University of Hong Kong, and Dr Anthea Fraser
Gupta, Senior Lecturer in Modern English Language in the School of
English, University of Leeds.
Dr Li will present a paper discussing
current debates about the most appropriate model of English for
teaching and learning in Southeast Asia. Dr Gupta will discuss issues
surrounding the traditional notion of Standard English when applied to
specific language education contexts of countries in Southeast Asia.
The conference will be of interest to
members of the public as well as professionals concerned with the role
of English in Brunei and Southeast Asia general, and current topics in
English language education. The conference will also feature a number
of exhibitions on books, Brunei art works, communications and language
software as well as university publications.
Members of the public are welcome to
participate in the conference with a registration fee of $100 which
covers all conference activities, refreshments as well as the
conference dinner.
