Restaurants Want To Be Briefed On
Hygienic Standards
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Restaurant owners and operators applauded the
decision by relevant authorities to temporarily close establishments
that were found to have not reached a level of cleanliness as
specified by the Ministry of Health.
It is hoped that they could be
briefed on the standards set.
Those affected commented that they
have been trying to be as clean as possible, but sometimes missed out
on things that could force them to close their restaurants
temporarily.
"If we were given a checklist, then
we can ensure our workers follow guidelines.
"Unfortunately, most of us have been
kept in the dark," they remarked, adding that a few establishments
which looked very clean were still affected.
"Therefore, relevant authorities
should provide us with a cleanliness checklist so that we can work on
our weak areas," they said.
They also hoped that the move does
not only apply to some restaurants but all, including night stalls and
roadside food vendors.
Meanwhile, the public also applauded
the decision by the relevant authorities to temporarily close
restaurants not attaining the required standards.
They said that with the temporary
closure, restaurants would improve on the aspect of cleanliness.
"Clean restaurants'not only give a
good image of the Sultanate through word of mouth among foreign
tourists, but also locals, who will dine more at food establishments
in large numbers," they added.
They called for contests to be
organised on an annual basis to find the country's cleanest
restaurant.
Apart from restaurants, they also
called for places and buildings that have public toilets to be
inspected, and temporarily close them if their lavatories were not up
to standards. --
