Father Jailed For Stealing Quilt Covers
By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - A father of two who wanted to buy milk for his child but changed his mind and ended up stealing a quilt cover was sentenced to 3 months' imprisonment by the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Mohammad Alipah bin Lamat, 21, an unemployed local, pleaded guilty to stealing quilt covers worth B$105.90 from a department store in Gadong two days ago.

The court heard that the defendant, who had just recently been released from prison, went to the store to purchase milk for his child. However, he did not have enough money and made it his intention to steal something from the store.

The defendant then decided to take one set of quilt covers and put it into the rucksack that he was carrying and proceeded to exit the store, Prosecuting Officer Christopher Ng told the court yesterday.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant was spotted acting suspiciously by security personnel of the store who proceeded to question him about the items in the bag.

The defendant tried to escape but was stopped by the personnel. They later inspected the bag and found the quilt covers inside.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
