Bandar Seri Begawan - Residents living around the Muara Town area will be able to utilise the new state of the art Muara Library, which was officially opened by YB Pehin Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awg Hj Mohammad bin Hj Daud, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, yesterday morning.

According to the Minister in his welcoming remarks as guest of honour at the opening ceremony, four new libraries built on the concept of `communities' have been approved in the current 811 National Development Plan, and the four areas identified for the library facilities are Muara Town, Mukim Sengkurong, Lambak and Perpindahan Kampong Pandan in the Belait District.

Pehin Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Hj Mohammad added that currently two libraries have been completed, namely the Muara Library and the Kampong Pandan Library, while the Sengkurong Library and Lambak Library are scheduled to be opened by next year.

The guest of honour also hoped that residents around Muara Town would make good use of the library, which will accommodate the social needs of the community to become "a community filled with knowledge".

He also urged parents to encourage their children to make use of the facilities at the new library to instill the interest and culture of reading, and students to make use of the library as an informal education institute to raise their academic performance.

In another speech by Dr. Mataim bin Bakar, the Acting Director of the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP), he said that among the facilities and services available at the new Muara Library are book' lending, photocopy services, Internet services as well as an Online Public Access Catalogue.

A special corner for children has also been set up with the aim of nurturing interest in reading.

Several activities including a book sale, lectures and briefings on the library, games, and quiz and storytelling competitions have been organised in conjunction with the opening of the new Muara Library, said the Minister.

Prior to the cutting of ribbon, the guest of honour signed a plaque commemorating the opening of the Muara Library. The Minister then proceeded to tour the new library. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
