Deputy Defence Minister Visits
Brunei Mission In Aceh

Haji Umar made a working visit to Banda Aceh, in Indonesia from Dec
3-5.
The visit was aimed at having a
closer look at the progress of the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) and
meeting with Brunei Darussalam's contingent to the mission.
During the visit, the Deputy Minister
held a discussion with Mr. Peter Feith, Head of the Aceh Monitoring
Mission based in Banda Aceh.
He was briefed on the progress made
on the implementation of the peace agreement between the government of
Indonesia and theAceh Freedom Movement.
Mr
Feith expressed his admiration and satisfaction on the high level
professionalism and dedication demonstrated by the Brunei Darussalam
contingent in carrying out their tasks and responsibilities.
He expressed his appreciation for the
support given by the government of Brunei Darussalam through its
participation in the AMM.
The Deputy Minister also visited the
AMM District Office at Lamno, headed by a team leader from Brunei
Darussalam, Major Haslen bin Hj Hassan.
The AMM District Office serves as
monitoring posts for the AMM in various parts of Aceh Jaya.
Brunei Darussalam sent a 20 personnel
contingent to the AMM comprising 12 Royal Brunei Armed Forces
personnel and eight Royal Brunei Police Force personnel, led by Lt.
Col Md. Yussof bin Haji Abd Rahman.
Other countries that make up the AMM
are Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Norway,
Switzerland and the European Union.
This mission monitors the
implementation of the peace agreement set out in the Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) signed by the government of Indonesia and the Free
Aceh Movement (GAM) on Aug 15, 2005.
The involvement of RBAF personnel in
the mission is one of the Ministry of Defence initiatives in
projecting positive contribution by Brunei Darussalam towards the
region's stability and security.
The Brunei Darussalam contingent
departed last September for Banda Aceh, and are assigned to different
locations in the province. --
