Public Called On To Drive
Cautiously Amid Rainy Season
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Royal Brunei Police once again urged the public to
exercise extra caution when driving in the rain and to periodically
check the conditions-of their vehicles' tyres.
The department's head of public
relation made the announcement following a recent accident that
claimed the lives of five locals.
Motorists are urged to slow down
during heavy downpours, when the car tyres can lose all contact with
the road at speed of over 50 miles per hour.
Road observers said vehicles will be
riding on water or "hydroplaning" at speed in excess of 50 miles per
hour, and a slight change of wind direction or a gust of wind can
cause a vehicle to veer off the road.
They advised drivers to slow down at
the first sign of rain when the roads are the most slippery due to
grease and dust on the surface.
"If the road is slippery, it will not
give your tyres the grip you need. You must drive slower than you
would on a dry road," they said.
In one of the deadliest road
accidents in the country's history, four women and a man were killed
after two cars collided with each other along the Tutong Highway near
Kampung Penanjong in Tutong on November 26.
On November 17, a senior bank
executive died instantly when his vehicle crashed into a tree at high
speed at Lumut bypass. The victim, a Frenchman, was said to have been
driving' alone from Kuala Belait to Bandar Seri Begawan.
The police speculated that the
victim's car skidded as a result of slippery road condition.
Meanwhile, the first five days of
Hari Raya Aidilfitri saw as many as 34 road accidents in the country,
though none were fatal. --
