Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Deputy Minister of Communications, Dato Paduka
Haji Yusoff bin Hj Abdul Hamid, led a delegation from the Brunei
Darussalam Information Technology (BIT) Council to attend the
Microsoft Government Leaders Forum - Asia in New Delhi, India from
Dec. 5-7.
The Brunei delegation will meet Bill
Gates and other senior Microsoft executives and have the opportunity
to pitch the country as a location for attractive investment to
Microsoft and other government and corporate leaders from 15
Asia-Pacific countries.
Delegation members will have a live
dialogue on the future and expoloitation of ICT with prominent leaders
from Japan, China, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka,
among other countries.
Dato
Paduka Haji Yusoff said Brunei aspires to create an advanced
information society in which everyone is able to access, gain, share
and exploit knowledge to maximise everyone's potential and improve the
quality of life.
This is a prerequisite to transform
Brunei into a knowledge-based economy, supported by modern
communications infrastructure.
The average focus areas like
e-education, e-government and e-society are crucial in this respect,
he said.
The adoption of ICT usage in society
must be further encouraged and the important aspect of increasing
users' confidence in rising ICT in their daily lives must be
addressed, he said.
The forum will provide a dynamic
discussion platform for government leaders from the Asia-Pacific
region. Wide ranging perspectives will be exchanged on issues
revolving around the central theme of "Leading in a Connected World".
A wide range of issues will be
presented in three discussion forum tracks related to knowledge
Economy, governance and education.
The service (information) industry
viz-a-viz e-business or e-commerce is already becoming an economic
niche and probably is an answer to Brunei's diversification from oil
and gas, the Ministry of Communications said. --
