Flash Flood Hits Kiulap

Begawan - The heavy downpour on Thursday night has caused
several houses especially in Kg. Kiulap to be submerged in water.
The worst affected areas were at Spg
118-12/ 86/22 and 26 where houses were still flooded with water even
until 10 am yesterday.
Fire personnel were present to pump
out the muddy water from the houses. One resident said the water level
almost reached up to his knee.
Another victim, Norasmadinah Bte
Abdullah, 36, a mother of five children had to move out on Thursday
night after her wooden house was submerged in water leaving her house
to be covered with mud and damaged the mattresses and clothing.
She said that she had lived in the
dilapidated house which she rents at $170 a month. She works at a
beverage company in Beribi and earns around $400.
As a result of the flood, she had to
stay at her relative's place in Kg. Rimba. - Her parents are from Kg.
Sukang in the Belait District.
"The water level has reached, up to
about one foot and this is the worst that has ever happened to us. I
had called on the authorities such as Baitul Mal-and the Yayasan to
assist us in repairing the house," she said.
The Fire Services Department said
yesterday they received a lot of calls concerning fallen trees and
those who required assistance to pump out flood water from their
houses.
The Meteorological Services said
yesterday that Brunei is experiencing a North-East Monsoon season
between November and January where heavy rainfalls are a normal
occurrence.
They said that the heavy downpour
started at 7pm till lam on Thursday night. The highest recorded
rainfall in Brunei was at 252 mm back in 1983. --
