Pirate Taxi From Pontianak Nailed

Kuala Belait - An Indonesian believed to be making a fast buck operating 'Taxi Sapu' or pirate taxi to ferry passengers from the very distant Pontianak in Kalimantan was among those arrested in an Immigration Operation carried out on Thursday night in the Belait District.

He was arrested for bringing in five passengers, believed to be Indonesians, who were charged $100 each.

"He violated his visit pass to ferry passengers to Pontianak and was issued a special pass," an Immigration officer said.

Led by the Acting Head of Immigration in the Belait district, Rosli B. Kiprawi; sonic 10 Immigration personnel and eight Police personnel were involved in the operation which was held in the vicinity of Sungai Tujoh Control post.

The spot check was aimed at checking foreign workers who overstayed, prevent illegal activities and as a routine check began at around 5.30pm and ended at 10.30pm. Other offences detected include one driver caught for driving without a valid licence.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
