1st Brunei Marathon Sports Expo

Begawan - More than 50 guests, comprising senior government
officials and sponsors of the inaugural Brunei Marathon, attended the
official opening ceremony of the P' Brunei Marathon Sports Expo 2005
held at Hassanal Bolkiah Indoor Stadium yesterday.
The Expo was officially declared open
by the guest of honour, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Yakub bin Abu Bakar,
Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. After the launch, the
guest of honour toured the exhibition booths.
During the opening ceremony, Awang
Haji Harts bin Haji Othman, Chairman of the 1 s' Brunei Marathon
Sports Expo 2005 Committee, said the 1st Brunei Marathon, dubbed
`Asian's richest marathon', is one of the most spectacular sporting
events of the year in Brunei.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of
Culture, Youth and Sports and Excellence Event Management, the Expo
brings together retailers, manufacturers and sporting associations
from all over the country under one roof. It is held as part of the
ministry's initiative to promote health and fitness in Brunei
Darussalam.
"The Expo allows local sports shops,
associates and entrepreneurs to introduce and display their products
to local sports enthusiasts," said Awang Hj Harts.
Also present at the opening ceremony
was Pg Sharifuddin Pg Hj Bakar of Excellence Event Management, the
official event organiser of the Brunei Marathon.
The Expo, held in conjunction with
the `International Year of Sports and Physical Education 2005', also
features a number of exciting games and activities for visitors,
especially young ones.
These include magic shows, free
health screenings, fitness demonstrations and tests, door gifts and
fitness education talks by sports and medical experts.
Over 2,000 runners have signed up to
take part in the exciting event on December 11 and more than 700
ofthem will be running for Standard Chartered Bank's `Seeing is
Believing' fundraising initiative, which aims to raise funds to help
the visually-impaired,

participants are urged to .pick up their `runners packs' and SCB
`Seeing is Believing' packs at the Expo.
The Expo will be opened from loam to
l0pm daily until December 8. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Meanwhile, there will be a Wushu
demonstration by the Wushu Federation of Brunei Darussalam (WFBD) from
10.30am till 11am today at the Expo. Wushu enthusiasts are welcomed to
watch this exciting event. --
