Fake Currency Warning
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The detection of nine fake $500 Brunei currency notes
within a week has led the police to caution the public, especially
retailers and operators at supermarkets to be wary of receiving $500
currency notes issued in 1989.
The police yesterday said between Nov
21 and 29 they received six reports on fake currency cases from banks
and supermarkets in Brunei/Muara and Belait districts.
The cases involved nine currency
notes issued in 1989. The police are questioning two local men and two
local women aged between 20 and 30 years to assist in the
investigation.
The police said that four of the
notes have two similar serial numbers. The notes lack the security
features including the invisible image of the crest of Brunei
Darussalam, continuous and embedded security thread, front and back
recognition and latent image.
The notes were printed using superior
quality paper to make it look similar to genuine currency.
The police have urged the public to
come forward to provide them with more information on any activities
involving fake notes.
Supplying, possessing or distributing
fake notes is a serious offence in Brunei. Those found guilty could
face imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine or both. --
