Call For Safety Gear For Construction Workers
By Rosli Abidin Yahya & Hj Minor Absah

Bandar Seri Begawan - An incident last Monday involving an Indonesian labourer who fell to his death at Kg Sg Akar prompted the public to call for mandatory regulations for construction workers to be provided with safety gear.

The consular at the Indonesian Embassy said yesterday that a report was received from the victim's employer who said the worker fell from the rooftop of a private house construction.

His body was sent home yesterday evening. The consular said the worker was not insured, but the employer promised to pay for the transport of the body back to Indonesia.

Last Monday, the Bulletin reiterated the need for construction workers to be given safety equipment after the public highlighted that some labourers were spotted working on rooftop with no safety apparatus in Jalan Muara.

Members of the public said the workers could slip and fall to their death, adding that some workers were seen walking along a beam four storey above the ground without any safety gear.

The construction industry contributes to more than 28,000 jobs where nearly 90 per cent were filled by foreign workers, according to 2002 statistics. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
