Bruneians Safe In Nations Hit By Tsunamis

Bandar Seri Begawan – Bruneians have not been affected in the earthquake and tsunamis which hit three ASEAN member nations Sunday.

The information was conveyed to Radio Television Brunei by the Brunei Brunei High Commission in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

According to Brunei Darussalam Ambassador in Jakarta, the disaster did not affect areas where most Bruneians reside in Indonesia.

His Excellency the Ambassador said that the areas affected were mostly in Northern Sumatra around the Aceh province.

The tremors did not reach areas to the east, including Jakarta where most Bruneians reside.

Up to now, the embassy has not received any information of Bruneians being affected.

Meanwhile, the Acting Deputy Head of the Brunei Darussalam High Mission in Kuala Lumpur assured that the Brunei High Commission in the Malaysian capital would ensure the safety of Bruneians.

He said as of today, after making contacts to the various affected areas, no Bruneians have been involved in the tragedy.

The High Commission also has not received inquiries from families in Brunei of those currently on holidays in Malaysia.

In Bangkok, Brunei Darussalam Temporary Charge d' Affaires said that so far they have not received any information pertaining to Bruneians being involved in the disaster.

However, he said, the embassy will continue to communicate with the local authorities for confirmation.

He said the embassy has not received calls from Brunei citizens who may probably be in the areas affected.

Likewise, the embassy also has not received calls from Brunei reporting that there were Bruneians in the areas hit by the tsunami. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
