Tsunami-Hit Tourist Hotspots
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The devastation caused by the tidal waves triggered
by the strong earthquake off Indonesia's Sumatra is prompting some
Bruneians to reconsider their plans to travel to tourist hotspots in
disaster-hit countries.
As it is the peak of the holiday
season, it is understood that some Bruneians are holidaying at
Thailand.
A Bruneian woman in her 40s said that
her colleague is in Phuket when the catastrophe struck. She is
concerned about the fate of her friend who went there for a diving
trip.
Some Bruneians are also understood to
have taking the opportunity of the long public holiday to travel using
the budget airline, AirAsia, which offers flights to Phuket, Bangkok,
Surabaya, Jakarta and other interesting places.
Another local woman, who is in Kuala
Lumpur for her budget holiday flight to Bangkok, is also thinking
twice about departing.
News of deaths is causing unease
about celebrating the coming of the New Year in the midst of a
national crisis.
The tremors were reported to have
been felt as far away as the Thai capital, Bangkok.
Many people are canceling their trips
causing mounting pressure for travel agencies throughout the world,
including Brunei Darussalam, sources noted.
Currently flights to tidal
wave-affected countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India
as well as Thailand are operating normally, a local travel agency
official said. --
