By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei’s Minister of Education said the government
wants to see students acquire knowledge from the best universities
that possess heritage and knowledge resources with proven research.
|
Revealing that five Brunei students
will pursue their studies at Oxford University while another
five at Cambridge University, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato
Seri Setia Awg Abdul Rahman said the ministry will widen their
support services by opening up students affairs offices in
Singapore, US and Australia and introduce more competitive
selection system that takes into account strength, suitability
and ability of students recommended for such scholarships.
The minister also said that his
ministry would widen the destination of choice for Brunei
students to pursue studies at world renowned institutions in the
United States, Germany, China, Japan and South Korea to acquire
knowledge from unique and strong academicians.
The minister said this at the
thanksgiving and get-together ceremony for 428 government
scholarship students who will be studying at local and foreign
institutions at the International Convention Centre in Berakas,
yesterday.

A handful of them will study at the
top 20 universities in the UK. Others will head for New Zealand,
US, France, Canada, Malaysia and Australia. |
Pehin Rahman added that 131
graduates under the government scholarships have completed their
studies this year. Ten graduates have obtained first class, 47 have
graduated with second class upper while another six have received
their masters and three will complete their PhDs.
In elaborating the award of
scholarship, he said the Ministry of Education in providing overseas
scholarships would give priority to send students to renowned
universities worldwide.
The strength of the universities
coupled with the teaching and learning environment, brighter
students from overseas, vast knowledge of academicians both
regionally and internationally generates intellectual discussions
and renowned research.
In line with this, the Ministry of
Education will ensure that programmed offered under the government
scholarships can fulfill the human resource needs in Brunei. In
addition, the choice of programmed under such scheme will not affect
programmed run by the local tertiary institutions, but enrich the
production of highly skilful graduates.
In other words, local scholarship
students studying at the local university are of similar importance
to those who are offered to study abroad as they are the selected
ones amongst thousands of applicants. They are also given the
opportunity to continue their studies through various twinning
programmed under the MoU with renowned universities in UK and New
Zealand. "We will add more programmed as their benefits are vast,"
he said.
The management of present
scholarship schemes will be enhanced and currently the Ministry of
Education is outlining plans to introduce placement system for
students during their semester break at government and private
agencies in Brunei to gain early exposure and work experience.
"There has been a 10 per cent
increase in the percentage of 'O' and 'A' levels this year. In 2007,
two masters’ students pursued their PhDs while two other students
who obtained first class in their first degree were offered to take
PhDs. Another 39 first degree students took masters for the 20071
2008 session and three 11/8D students are currently at in second
year of their first-degree courses," he said.
Three students taking accountancy
are continuing then studies taking professional Association of
Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or Certified Financial
Analyst (CFA). --
