Two Smugglers Escape Leaving Goods
Behind
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Mouse trails at the border have been known as a
popular gateway for smugglers to enter and exit the country with
contrabands.
Late yesterday afternoon, the Royal
Customs and Excise Department with Forest Rangers and Halal Food
Control section officials under the Ministry of Religious Affairs
foiled an attempt to illegally transport contraband into the country
from one of the many mouse trails located in Kämpong Junjungan.
Two smugglers on their motorbikes,
carrying smuggled goods across the border through the mouse trail
were surprised by enforcement officials thanks to tip-offs from
members of the public.
After noticing the group of
enforcement officials, both smugglers jumped off their bikes and ran
into the jungle and escaped from the enforcement officials,
abandoning the contraband and bikes at the scene.
Enforcement officials found 12
bottles of alcohol, 111 cartons of cigarettes, cow's liver weighing
150 kg, and nine empty gasoline tongs.
The empty gasoline tongs are
believed to be used to fill fuel in exchange for the illegal items
to be delivered to someone waiting at the mouse trail.
The Royal Customs and Excise
Department thanked members of the public for the tip-off and urged
the public with information on smuggling activities to contact the
Hotline at 2382422 or SMS to 8714422. --
