His Majesty Hails Brunei-Vietnam
By Shareen Han

Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday lauded Vietnam's introduction of reforms, leading to more opportunities in expanding trade and other areas of cooperation between the two countries in future.

In a titah during a dinner hosted for Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Ding at Istana Nurul Iman yesterday, His Majesty said that bilateral relations have grown stronger, encompassing areas in defence, trade, labour and education.

His Majesty said that Vietnam's growing presence in the Asean region has enabled the country "not just to face the modern world but to take part in its affairs and influence its direction."

"This has been most evident in the contribution your government and people have made in shaping the direction of regional policy," His Majesty said.

The monarch said that Brunei is privileged to host the Ministerial Meeting when Vietnam became a member of Asean in 1995, resulting in the two countries becoming close friends and strong regional partners.

His Majesty said that the government and people of Vietnam have demonstrated the hard work and confidence needed to implement "bold reforms."

"You have not only created the region's fastest growing economy but have attracted the attention of investors ail over the world," His Majesty added.

This fine record of achievement has further led to Vietnam hosting last year's Apec Summit and entry into the World Trade Organisation, His Majesty went on to say.

His Majesty said that Brunei is pleased to play a small part in assisting Vietnam's growth through education and training. "We are also delighted to have a growing number of your people working here to help our development," said His Majesty.

His Majesty said that Brunei is now looking forward to expanding future opportunities in trade and widening the scope of the two countries' friendship and cooperation.

Prime Minister Nguyen said that with the strong determination of the two countries' leaders, both countries have developed in various fields, including politics, trade, culture, education and sports.

"Under the wise reign of His Majesty, Brunei has now become a prosperous nation in the region, possessing a modern oil and gas industry and is an rapidly developing country," he said. He added that both countries have agreed on measures and major directions to enhance cooperation to fulfil the interests of the people and making more contributions to each country's economic development. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
