Brunei Schools To Go Wireless
By Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A revolutionary $5.9 million information technology
project embarked upon by the Ministry of Education will soon make
students in Brunei schools wired.
|
More than 2,000 laptops will be
distributed to both primary and secondary schools as part of the
agreement as schools will enjoy portable and mobile teaching aids
expected to be in place in five months' time.
The project called Mobitel was
initiated with a signing ceremony for the supply, delivery,
installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of related
hardware and software for mobile teaching and learning in government
primary and secondary schools between the Ministry of Education and
AV Electronics Pte Ltd at the Business Centre of the Empire Hotel
and Country Club yesterday.
Dyg
Hjh Norjum binti Hj Yusop, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Corporate
Services) at the Ministry of Education, was present at the ceremony.

Dyg
Hjh Aishah binti Hj Md Husain, Acting Director of Schools, Ministry
of Education, who spoke during the event said, "The total number of
laptops to be distributed to schools is 2,135 and the total cost of
the whole project which includes hardware, software, training and
maintenance is B$5.9 million."

Laptops, which can be carried
anywhere within the school premises, will not limit teaching and
learning to computer labs or classrooms only, hence the name "Mobile
Teaching and Learning".
These laptops are also networked
wirelessly, unlike the present desktop computers in labs that are
connected using cables. Also, once the School Network Infrastructure
(SNI) project is ready, these laptops can be used by teachers and
students to access the Internet from anywhere within the school
premises.
"Computers are used in education to
enhance the teaching and learning processes. I hope teachers and
students will be able to benefit from these new facilities by using
them wisely," added Dyg Hjh Aishah. -- Courtesy of Borneo
