USS Jarrett Named After
Outstanding WWII Sailor

Begawan - The USS Jarrett (FFG-33), which is currently in the
country partaking in the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training
(Carat) 2007 between the US Navy and Royal Brunei Armed Forces, is
named after an outstanding sailor in the World War 11, Vice Admiral
Harry B Jarrett, who received a Navy Cross for heroism in the Battle
of the Coral Sea.
Jarrett also served with great
valour as a destroyer screen commander for the fast carrier task
force operations in the Pacific as well as a bombardment group
commander in the-Marshall and Marianas campaigns.
Awarded the Legion of Merit for
command of his destroyer fire support unit in the Marianas campaign,
other medals awarded to him were: Silver Star Medal for gallantry in
commanding the destroyer screen for carrier strikings on the. Palaus,
the Philippines, and the Marianas and Bronze Star Medal for heroic
actions as Commander Scouting Line for the fast carrier force bound
for the raids early in 1945 on Okinawa, Tokyo and Formosa.
Built by Todd Pacific Shipyards
Corporation (Los Angeles) in California, the Perry class FFG forms a
capable undersea warfare platform with the LAMPS-III helicopter
onboard.
Its MK 15 close-in weapons system
and MK 75 rapid-fire gun provide secondary anti-air capability and
ships of this class are often referred to as "FFG-7", pronounced
FIG-7, after the lead ship, -USS Oliver Hazard Perry.
Commissioned at Long Beach Naval
Station on July 2, 1983, it is 453 feet in length with a
displacement of 4,100 tonnes and speed of 29+ knots.
Its armament also features an MK 32
ASW surface vessel torpedo tubes and features AN/SPS 49 air search
radar, AN/SPS' 55 surface search radar, and MK 92 fire control
system for its combat systems.
A total of 24 officers, 18 chief
petty officers and 183 enlisted complement the crewmembers of USS
