Disaster Management Training
By Ben Ng

Bandar Seri Begawan - Due to the recent rains and flooding, the National Disaster Management Council Brunei is conducting a disaster management workshop with the Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies (APCSS) at the Orchid Garden Hotel from July 30 to August 2.

Speakers will brief participants on the risks Brunei Darussalam is facing as it develops disaster management strategies and plans.

In line with the council's objectives, participants will be given the opportunity to use game scenarios to explore the processes and issues involved in coordinating government response to a disaster within the context of Brunei's disaster management strategy.

The council aims to increase its current networks and relationships across government agencies and also to identify measures to increase disaster resilience in relation to the recent weather anomalies.

Included in the four-day workshop is the opportunity to extract key findings from the game scenarios to explore how they could further develop an intra-governmental response to an international request for disaster assistance, in this case countries around the Asia Pacific region.

The Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies is a Department of Defence academic institute that addresses regional and global security issues using a multilateral and multidimensional approach to defining and addressing regional security issues and concerns. It provides a forum, where current and future, military and civilian leaders from many Asia-Pacific nations gather to enhance security cooperation.

The centre was set up to educate and develop leaders to advance strategic communications and security cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
