Surprise Check On Car Wash Outlets
By Yusrin Junaidi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Following reports of unlicenced car wash premises on
the rise, the Brunei-Muara District Office through its Licensing
Section together with the Labour Department and Immigration
Enforcement Section conducted a surprise check on these business
outlets.
The inspection was carried out in
several places in the Gadong commercial area where many car wash
outlets are operating.
The Borneo Bulletin in May reported
that any car wash that is set up at car parks or outside commercial
buildings will be deemed illegal. This was disclosed by the Licencing
Secretary at the Brunei-Muara District Office, Hj Hashim bin Hj Abd
Rahman.
There has been ongoing monitoring on
car wash operators and that it is believed that several warning
letters have been issued to them. Those who continue to flout warnings
can be fined not exceeding B$10,000 under the Miscellaneous Licence
Act.
Unlicensed car wash operators are not
only flouting the rules and regulations of the Licensing Board as some
of them do not have miscellaneous licences, they do not have approval
to employ any workers and hence are flouting the regulations of the
Immigration and the Labour Departments.
Most of the workers at car wash
premises do not have work permits. Those who did not possess any
proper documents were brought to the Immigration Department for
further investigations yesterday.
Car wash business is only allowed if
it is carried out properly inside a commercial building and the
operator must follow rules and guidelines of the relevant agencies
when applying for the miscellaneous licence.

Gadong and Menglait areas have been issued licences to operate after
they complied with rules and requirements. -- Courtesy of Borneo
