PR Fined For Undeclared Goods

Begawan - A 48-year-old permanent resident working in Labi was
fined $4,500 or four months' jail in default in the Bandar
Magistrate's Court yesterday for being in possession of large amounts
of cigarettes, tobacco and booze, which he failed to declare as legal
imports.

Yew Yeau's house and canteen at Kg Tunggulian, Sg Liang was raided
with the defendant's consent by Customs Preventive Officers following
a tip-off on May 16.
Personnel found 53 cartons of a
variety of cigarette brands, 55 packets of another brand of cigarettes
and 27 packets of tobacco.
The items, worth around $1,200, were
mentioned in the first charge against the defendant while the second
charge stated that the defendant was in possession of 18 bottles of
undeclared liquor worth about $190.
All the goods were bought by his
relatives and were intended for sale to Thai and Indonesian workers
who came to the canteen, the defendant stated in court. -- Courtesy of Borneo
