By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 48-year-old permanent resident working in Labi was fined $4,500 or four months' jail in default in the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday for being in possession of large amounts of cigarettes, tobacco and booze, which he failed to declare as legal imports.

Chong Yew Yeau's house and canteen at Kg Tunggulian, Sg Liang was raided with the defendant's consent by Customs Preventive Officers following a tip-off on May 16.

Personnel found 53 cartons of a variety of cigarette brands, 55 packets of another brand of cigarettes and 27 packets of tobacco.

The items, worth around $1,200, were mentioned in the first charge against the defendant while the second charge stated that the defendant was in possession of 18 bottles of undeclared liquor worth about $190.

All the goods were bought by his relatives and were intended for sale to Thai and Indonesian workers who came to the canteen, the defendant stated in court. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
