Planet Jupiter In Their Eyes
By Yusrin Junaidi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Over 500 people, including students, teachers,
parents and passers-by as well as the village head of Kampong Jaya
Setia, were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view the solar
system through telescopes LX 200 GPS Meade, Theodulite and EIX 70 at
Amar Pahlawan Primary School last Tuesday evening.
Some 40 officials from the Astronomy
Unit of the Survey Department were on hand to set up their finest
equipment to ensure the solar system could be viewed through the
telescopes. Unfortunately, only planet Jupiter was visible that
evening.
There was also a presentation after
the viewing to provide attendees with additional knowledge on the
solar system. A student, Awg Mohd Hinul, expressed his excitement over
seeing Jupiter though he was a little disappointed that other stars
were nowhere to be seen.
Jupiter is the fourth brightest
object in the sky, after the sun, the moon and planet Venus. Since
prehistoric times, the planet has been known as the bright "Wandering
Star".
It is the fifth planet from the sun
and the largest in the solar system - twice as big as all other
planets combined, with a diameter of 142,984 kilometres. The orbit of
Jupiter is 778,330,000 kilometres around the sun, and has a mass of
1.900e27 kilogrammes. -- Courtesy of Borneo
