Brunei Ruler Warns Against Ill
Influences On Local Youths
Bandar Seri
Begawan - His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of
Brunei has lauded youths as the pride of a nation, describing them as
a group that can shape the future and carry over the national
aspirations.
|
Although they can think for
themselves and are active with their own programmes and agenda,
nonetheless, they need guidance from the community at large.
His Majesty was speaking at
Brunei Darussalam's first National Youth Day observation, at the
Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in
Berakas, this morning.
A society that's awake would not
let neglect its youths, but look after them accordingly.
This is not a form of
restriction, just a way of guiding them. Don't bow to the
influences of money, but take into account what would happen to
the race and the nation if the youths are not brought up properly.
What the gains and the losses? In
charting the future of the youngsters, we should not show an image
unbecoming of the national mould. |

For example, a religious life is our
special character, and customs and traditions are priceless.
Respecting the elders, meticulousness
and caring for others are strong in the Bruneian culture. These are
the values that make us progress and respected.
His Majesty went on to say that
youths are a national asset for nation building, and as such must
possess the necessary education and skills.
To this end, His Majesty's government
has provided various educational institutions for attaining such
knowledge and expertise to enable the country achieve excellence for a
long time to come.
Youths are valuable assets in the
context of nation building.
They're active contributors in
voluntary field.
His Majesty values their involvement
in the field, because this reflects their sincerity and willingness to
make sacrifice. Without this spirit all voluntary activities would not
become reality.
His Majesty believes that voluntarism
in a citizen determines the progress we achieve, because a willing
heart opens a thousand doors.
This is the strength and speciality
of voluntarism.
His Majesty lamented that youths are
often exploited by certain quarters for the latter’s own interests,
such as using them in selling various entertainment products and
costumes that are contradictory to the national norms.
Asking why youths are targeted, His
Majesty reminded youth leaders to be on guard against such
exploitations.
Why are youths the target? Because of
their attractive characteristics and the psychological factor that
make them easily influenced by trends that are hot and new.
This weakness is often exploited by
certain parties without care for what is right or wrong.
This type of exploitation should not
be left unchecked.
Instead it should be taken care and
handled seriously by everybody, especially by youth leaders
themselves.
Programmes to inject awareness should
be organised, including for parents and the community before the
problem becomes a chronic social issue.
His Majesty has been made to
understand that the impact of such entertainment products and costumes
on the youths is minimal, the excuse being such things are only
seasonal and not permanent.
But to His Majesty one only suffers
the consequences of one's wrong doings.
So take caution, and do some self
evaluation for the excellence of our youths and everyone.
On this auspicious occasion and in
the presence of youth leaders for all over the country, His Majesty
declares every August 1 as the National Youth Day.
