Seminar Highlights Importance Of Exclusive Breastfeeding For Infants

Bandar Seri Begawan - Teachers and students from various secondary schools, colleges and higher institutions from the Brunei-Muara District yesterday attended an Optimal Infant Feeding & . Breastfeeding seminar held at the premises of the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Nursing College. The seminar was held in conjunction with the World Breast Feeding Week 2005.

The ceremony began with a welcoming remark delivered by Pengiran Hajah Mas Salwa bte Pg Mohd Said, Deputy Principal (Administration) of the PAPRSB Nursing College.

The seminar was chaired by Dayang Hajah Jainah bte Hj Musa, Head Programmer of Midwifery Education at the PAPRSB Nursing College.

There were four presentations during the seminar delivered by Dr Hajah Roselina bte Dato Paduka Haji Yaakub, Dr Hajah Emilia bte Haji Md Kassim, Hjh Roseyati bte Dato Paduka Haji Yaakub and Hajah Dayang Jaliha Haji Momin.

Exclusive breastfeeding means that the infant receives only breast milk and no other food or drinks with the - exception of vitamins, mineral supplements or medicines for the first six months.

`Safe', `Sound' and `Sustainable' were the three major factors that lead to exclusive breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding is safe because it contains protective factors which help to prevent and fight infections such as diarrhea and pneumonia and reduce the risk of allergic condition, particularly asthma.

The second factor- `sound' - attributes to the nutrients in breast milk which is present in the right quantity and of special quality. Finally, breast milk is sustainable because of its constant availability.

Among the topics discussed were `Why Encourage Mother's To Breastfeed Their Babies For Six Months, Why Babies Need Additional Food Supplements, Suitable Food Supplements For Babies Aged 6 Months Till 2 Years and Breastfeeding Initiative in the Community Section'.
