Road Project To Boost Kiulap
'Satellite Town' Bid
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Kampong Kiulap area in combination with Mukim
Gadong is currently being developed towards becoming a `satellite
town' to Bandar Seri Begawan and is expected to eventually serve more
than 20,000 customers. The area also has the benefit of being an added
attraction to tourists.
The construction of a loop road
linking about 20 acres of land would encourage further commercial
development in the Kiulap area.
This was stated by Project
Implementation Director Mr Lim Kim Peck during the handing over
ceremony of the project. The cost of implementation of the
1.2-kilometre "Kiulap Implementation Project (KIP) Phase-3" road loop
project is around B$870,000.
According to Mr Lim, the project once
completed could serve and accommodate about 240 units of commercial
shophouse units worth millions of dollars in infrastructure
development. Business' could flourish even further in the Kiulap area,
in turn generating more employment especially for locals, he said.
The project is being- implemented by
the Development Control & Competent Authority with the co-ordination
of the project implementation team acting on behalf of the landowners
who have contributed financially to the project.
Mr
Lim said that His Majesty's Government has always emphasised that the
private sector should play a role as the engine of growth and real
partner in development with the government being a facilitator and
regulator that facilitates business for progress.
The project planning began in April
2002 with the briefing of landowners by the Town & Country Planning
Department on the purpose and importance of the loop road project.
Among the several matters discussed
during the briefing were the cost sharing of the project and the land
lots that would be affected by the proposed road project. The actual
project began in February 2004. --
