Education UK Expo Paves The Way
For Prospective Student
By Jon Tampoi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Eighth Clearing Exhibition for UK Institutions of
Higher Learning was officially launched yesterday, signalling the
strong relations between Brunei Darussalam and the United Kingdom in
the field of tertiary education.
Present as guest of honour to
officiate, the opening of the "Education UK" exhibition was the Acting
Director General at the Ministry of Education, Dyg Apsah Bte Hj Abdul
Majid.
Dyg
Apsah in her speech said that Brunei Darussalam and the UK have a long
history of educational ties, and that Brunei still uses examinations
produced by UK-based examination boards.
"The link between the two nations has
been further strengthened with visits by senior education officers to
the UK and British Educators to Brunei Darussalam, said the guest of
honour.
"The link is manifested further as
more Brunei students study in British educational institutions
compared to other nations. Even though a number of private students
also choose other countries, Britain is still the most popular
choice," she added.
The guest of honour expressed her
firm belief that "such exhibition is a step in the direction to
benefit both parties, Great Britain and Brunei Darussalam, to continue
working closely together".
The Acting Director General also
thanked participants for their initiative to advise and assist
prospective students on life as a student in the UK.
Dyg
Apsah also spoke of her experiences both as an educator and as a
one-time student in the UK.
The diverse range of courses
available, coupled with a "mix and match" subject choice based on
career goals and personal interest is another attractive factor that
makes studying in the UK a top choice.
The one-day exhibition was held at
the Goldstone Ballroom of the Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong, yesterday.
The exhibition featured 14 institutions offering a wide variety of
courses in the UK.
The event enabled prospective
students to select the best courses to suit their career goals.
Students holding relevant qualifications were also able to secure
immediate placements at their desired institutions.
Representatives at the booths were on
hand to brief prospective students on details such as accommodation,
student activities and even part-time job prospects. Also present were
trained counselors from each institution.
Currently there are 750 Brunei
students purusing UK qualification. According to the British Council's
Director of Education and Training, Ms Susana Galvan, the exhibition
is a primary source of information for students seeking education
information or confirmation of application details as they have direct
access to the UK institutions through their representatives.
Earlier on, the Deputy High
Commissioner of Great Britain, Mr Martin Wally, presented his
welcoming speech in fluent Malay.
The guest of honour later cut the
ribbon to officiate the event and later toured several booths that
were put up by the participating institutions.
The opening ceremony was also
attended by invited guest officers from, the Ministry of Education,
students as well as members of the public. --
