By Hjh Saemah Zulkefli

Kuala Belait - Eight foreign nationals were detained for failing to produce relevant documents and visas during a surprise check yesterday. The eight men comprised three Bangladeshis, three Malaysians, a Thai and a Filipino.

After further investigations, the Immigration Department found that four of them did not have their immigration passes.

In the two-hour Operasi OPS Basmi 64 which started at 9am, 39 other foreign nationals consisting of Bangladeshis, Indonesians, Malaysians, Thais and Filipinos were checked.

The operation was held in five areas in the Belait District particularly housing construction and renovation sites.

Five officers conducted the operation with the objective of tracking downing those who had not adhered to the immigration and passport laws as well as other regulations.

The officials also searched for foreign workers who have been blacklisted by their employers, wanted people and those involved in other illegal activities.

In addition, the Immigration Department again reminded employers to ensure that their employees are provided with copies of their relevant documents to help make the department's investigation more efficient. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
