'Lovebirds' Caught In The Act

Tutong - Officers from the Religious Enforcement and Investigation Unit conducted an inspection along Jalan Pengasing at Pantai Seri Kenangan in Tutong District yesterday and nabbed a couple for violating Islamic religious rules.

The inspection conducted around 4pm was headed by Azmi bin Abd Hamid. The officers caught the young couple in the act inside a vehicle at an isolated place. The couple did not realise the officers were approaching them.

During questioning, the girl said she is 14 years old and studying in a school in Tutong District

The man, in his 20s, admitted being single and working as a security guard.

Under the Religious Council Act, Para 77, both suspects could be brought to the Syariah Court and charged with close proximity under Chapter 177(1) for the male and Chapter 177(2) for the female. If found guilty, the male would be fined $1,000 and the female $500.

Both were issued with letters requiring them to be present at the Religious Investigations Unit for further questioning on August 29, 2005. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
