NGO’s To Hold Talks At UBD
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Two local leaders of non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) in Brunei Darussalam will talk about the positive contributions
and roles of NGOs to the national development and progress at a
brainstorming session to be held tomorrow afternoon (August 25) at the
Senate Room, Chancellor Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalam campus in
Tungku Link.
Datin
Paduka Hjh Intan Hj Kassim, the President of Brunei Women Graduates
Association (PSW), and Hj Shadoon Hj Lamzi, the President of Consumers
Association of Brunei Darussalam (CAB), will be the main speakers at
the session.
The event, organised by the
university's Thursday Club, will look at the positive roles played by
private organisations and women's groups to work hand-in-hand with the
government on various social and community projects.
Observers said that the tasks in
tackling various issues, such as social ills, should not only rest
with the government but should also include NGOs who could play
positive roles too.
"The participation of various NGOs
will contribute towards the implementation of successful community
projects and initiatives.
"Women NGOs leaders must also play a
vital role in assisting and complementing government initiatives in
various projects, in particular those concerning women," they said.
In addition, the role of the family,
community and other social networks are crucial in creating an
"enabling environment" for the empowerment of NGOs as a strategy to
tackle social issues.
The event is open to members of the
public as well as students and lecturers.
