Himlayan Challenge
By Helena M. Mahathir
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The love of climbing has inspired Mohammad Kamri Hj
Samat of the Brunei Sports Climbing Federation, to attempt the 6,420m
climb up Mera Peak, in the Himalayas, Nepal.
Mohammad Kamri, aged 27, departed
Brunei Darussalam yesterday and will begin his climb tomorrow or
Friday.
In an interview with the Bulletin,
Mohammad Kamri said the climb and return down the mountain would take
him approximately 17 days. He hopes to reach the summit by Israk Meraj.
Believed to be the first Bruneian to
attempt this climb, Mohammad Kamri has been interested in
mountaineering since he was little. Due to his enthusiasm and deep
interest, his adventure to Mera Peak, which will cost about $5,000
will be paid from his own pocket.
His training included several trips
to scale Mount. Kinabalu in Sabah.
Mohammad Kamri hoped that his Mera
Peak trip will encourage other young Bruneians to attempt similar or
even bigger challenges.
Meanwhile, the Brunei Sports Climbing
Federation (BSCF) currently has over 100 members whose activities
mainly focus on caving and mountaineering.
Those interested in joining the
federation can contact the President of BSCF, Maizatul Akmam at
8674777 or Vice President, Shamsul Baharin, at 8751010.
Mera
Peak is one of the most popular of Nepal's 18 `Trekking Peaks',
offering an unforgettable experience of superb scenery and abundant
