Philippines Labour Dept Advises
Nationals In Brunei
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Philippines Department of Labour and Employment
(DOLE) issued an advisory made available to the Borneo Bulletin to
warn Filipinos intending to work in Brunei Darussalam to obtain proper
documents and deal only with legitimate agencies and individuals to
avoid penalties and other unnecessary consequences that illegal
workers encounter in the sultanate.
The advisory said DOLE Secretary
Patricia A. Sto. Tomas issued the warning following the latest
measures taken by the government of Brunei Darussalam against
foreigners working in the sultanate without valid working permits.
Sto.
Tomas said that workers should check first with the Philippine
Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) for any job in Brunei
Darussalam that may be offered them.
"For Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)
who are already in Brunei Darussalam, I advise them to approach the
Philippine Overseas Labour Office (POLO) there for assistance-in
connection with their stay in the sultanate," Sto. Tomas said.
Philippine Labour Attache in Brunei
Aida M. Estabillo meanwhile told Sto. Tomas that Brunei Darussalam has
strengthened its labour and immigration policies in a bid to weed out
illegal workers and other immigration offenders from the sultanate.
Estabillo
said that foreign workers who wish to extend their work passes or
permits have been advised to apply for extension directly with the
sultanate's Immigration and National Registration Department.
She said the advisory was issued in
the wake of reports indicating that shady agents producing fake work
permits operate in Brunei Darussalam. --
