By Azrol Azmi

Bandar Seri Begawan - A group of nine students and officers from the Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering, Kuala Belait are scheduled to take part in the 41 ABU ROBOCON competition held in Beijing, People's Republic of China from 25th till 291 August 2005.

Robocon is an annual robot contest that began in 2002 for university, college and polytechnic students in the Asia-Pacific region.

Under a common set of rules, participants will compete with their peers in other countries to create a robot using their creative and technological abilities in an open competition.

The contest aims to create friendship among youths with similar interests whilst also helping to advance engineering and to broadcast technologies throughout the region.

Among the main objectives of the contest are to develop more well-rounded students in the field of robot technology, to encourage inventions and innovations in robot design in a more challenging environment as well as to increase interest and understanding of engineering, design and technology, thereby creating greater demand for education in these fields.

The Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering team had earlier won a national contest organised by the Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre, Ministry of Education in partnership with Brunei Shell 'Petroleum Sdn Bhd and Radio Television Brunei (RTB).

The contest was held at the Multipurpose Hall of Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College on July 7, 2005.

During 4th ABU ROBOCON competition in Beijing, three of the students, namely Ho Chang Jie, Mohammad Hakim bin Mohamed Sabli and Alken Yee Soon Keong will enter their robot in a competition to "climb the Great Wall and feed Fuel Balls into five Torches and four Bonfires by means of collaboration between Manual and Automatic Machines".

Teammates Muhammad Hasrin bin Suaili, Rynnol bin Simpan, Mohd Noraziman bin Hj Jaini and Md Saiful Azreen bin Hj Mhd Jinni will meanwhile operate as the Pit Crew under the supervision of two officers Mr Ong Wee Hong and Norjemee Jenek.

A Doa Selamat and national flag presentation ceremony was held yesterday morning for the team's scheduled departure. Present as guest of honour and on hand to present the national flag was Pg Hj Mahari bin Pg Hj Abd Razak, Acting TV Assistant Director, RTB. Team leader Mr Ong Wee Hong received the national flag on behalf of the team. The Doa Selamat was read by Imam Hj Sari bin Hj Nasir from Kg Salambigar.

Meanwhile Dyg Sarimah bte Abu Bakar, Senior Education Officer, STEP Centre who was also at the ceremony hoped that the students would be ready, advising them to approach the competition in full spirit whilst remaining calm and open-minded.

She also hoped that the students as well as the accompanying officers would take the opportunity to further expand their knowledge throughout the competition especially in the area of robot construction technology, not only for competition but also for the benefit of creating and developing multi-tasking or production robots for use in the sultanate in the future. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
